Album Review

The melodic jangle pop from this Portland, OR, trio might have a "been there, done that" feel, but for the most part it works to the group's advantage. Rather than putting you to sleep, it puts you at ease. From the first moments of "Loud and Clear," the disc puts you in your comfort zone and recalls the carefree air of '90s-style power pop — the Matthew Sweet/Fastball/Wallflowers school of roots rock that is never fully outgrown. Songwriter and lead vocalist Michael Watson delivers with a smooth, passionate tenor and a round of Scripture-based lyrics lifted mainly from Psalms. At times, the familiarity of their sound works against them, but with some stylish work from Tim Aylward on keyboards and Brook Mosser on drums, the guys vary the tempo and the topics enough to keep things interesting throughout. Highlights include the story of guilt and redemption in "The Haunting," the giddiness of "I'll Love You So," and the slow build of "Streets."

Boring & Self Indulgent

Why is it that Christian music feels the need to sound "Christian?" The production is usually sub-par and the reason that the album is released on a Chrisitian label is because it couldn't compete on the mainstream level. Above The Golden State is no exception. The music is a very soft sonic lanscape for the vocals of Mike Watson, who sounds most the time like he just woke up. Energy is absent from this album and the lyrics are a stereotypical evocation of the Psalms.

It's all been done before, and better. It seems like this is a worship record attempting to disguise itself as a rock record while succeeding at neither. Where is the passion, the energy, the love of music? I listened to the entire album before coming to the conclusion that it is not to be found on this album. Unfortunately it's just another release by a Christian record label that continues to use Christ to sell a "christian" sound to a bunch of people who are already christians. It contains no creativity and no attempt to sing songs that bring glory to God by using the intelligence He has given us to write songs that are stimulating spritually as well as intellectually.

I read through some of the Psalms these songs were based on and found myself far more blessed...and less tired.

Great Worship - Great Music - For Any Decade

Not sure I would classify these folks as familiar 90s. Good solid song writing and composition with great rock rhythms underlined with expertly placed organs and strings. Can't believe these folks slipped through the cracks. Wish they would have played Creationfest. I rarely give five stars, but this is just good stuff. It has been a while since I've heard any band really nail a worship album. Checkout "Scared" - straight from the Psalms - you can almost feel the heart of David. Not a Christian? No worries - check out this great music. Buy the whole album - superlative value!
