Album Review
L.A. singer/songwriter Alex Lilly, Obi Best's frontwoman, also tours and records as a backing vocalist for the Bird and the Bee, whose retro-inflected sophisti-pop makes an almost too handy reference point for her own work. It's an apt one, though, both in terms of Lilly's light-spirited, keyboard-based songwriting and, especially, her jazzy, mellifluent, and playfully nuanced voice, which is uncannily reminiscent of Inara George. But she's got her own distinctive style to offer as well, an infectious, wide-eyed freshness particularly evident in her curious approach to writing melodies. Fluid but quirky, swooping and sauntering with conspicuous pleasure through unexpected intervals and off-kilter rhythms, her melodic lines sometimes take on an otherworldly, vaguely oriental cast, as on "Origami" (fittingly enough) and the bouncy, carnivalesque "Swedish Boy" (perhaps more incongruously — though the song is about "a made-up country" — but to superbly catchy effect). The melodies mostly connect up well with Lilly's similarly ruminative, charmingly colloquial lyrics: the merger isn't always completely natural, as the words can come off clunky and half-formed (like on the somewhat perplexing rant "It's Because of People Like You"), but her beguiling voice and prevailing sweetness go a long way toward smoothing things over. Elsewhere, along with some touchingly ambivalent relationship songs, "Days of Decadence" and "Green and White Stripes" deal quite nicely with, respectively, nostalgia and ineffability. Songwriting aside, plenty of Capades' appeal lies in its playfully inventive soundscape. Lest one forget, Obi Best are, at least ostensibly, a band, comprised of L.A. studio vets (whose credits include work with Beck and Jenny Lewis) who adorn Lilly's guitar and piano stylings with all manner of fizzy, dreamlike sounds and lush, offbeat electronic effects, underscoring the warmth and whimsy that make this such a welcome, winsome debut. ~ K. Come back to Seattle please
by armikkaI first heard Obi Best at a February `09 Seattle show where they opened for The Bird and The Bee and I haven't stopped listening to them since!
Alex Lilly is a very gifted vocalist and songwriter whose songs are wonderfully bizarre and beautifully crafted works combined with lush beats, permeating rhythms and memorably catchy lyrics; one can tell a lot of work went into this debut.
Lilly has a very sweet sounding voice and amazing range that you just don’t hear every day; my only wish is that the CD was longer!

Not Just BEST... Incredible
by new music junkieI had the pleasure of seeing Obi Best (Alex Lilly) open for The Bird & The Bee last night. Apparently, they are making the most of their touring dollars, as Alex sings backing vocals for Inara & Greg. It is always such a pleasant surprise for me when a previously unknown opening act offers a show that rivals the headlining act. This was exactly the case. I have had this little hidden gem in my CD player since acquiring it last night and I already love it and know I will enjoy it for a long time to come. The tracks that stood out during the performance have fast become my favorites: Swedish Boy, It's Because of People Like You, Days of Decadence and Nothing Can Come Between Us. These songs possess a playful, naïve undertone, most with an electronic Asian-inspired sound. Lilly comes across as a sweet & lovely ingénue, but clearly she is a talented, experienced musician. I'm obviously happy to have discovered Obi Best! Also kudos to Wendy Wang, who supported both bands and also has an amazing voice.
Amazing!
by bored listenerThis is a must-have! One of the best new albums I have bought in at least a year. Each song is addicting...some favorites to mention are 'Nothing Can Come Between Us', 'It's Because Of People Like You'...they are all good! It reminds me of Feist or Cat Power at times, but a more upbeat style. Love it!
