Local Boy Makes Good

by MermanSam

I had occasion to jam with Matt Goodwin - the creative force behind Window View - when he was 13 and I was 23. As I laid down a lugubrious bassline, he improvised a swinging solo which, to my mind, ill-suited the melancholy mood of the piece. “This is a goth song, not a jazz song,” I told him - whereupon he promptly began vamping in an appropriate minor key, perfectly complementing the rest of the arrangement. He intuitively grasped my amorphous vision and played accordingly - and compellingly. Even then, the younger had surpassed the elder technique-wise.

Now the boy returns as a man with this self-titled debut. His trademark virtuosity remains intact, as does his aversion to brooding. Window View deals almost exclusively in earnest lyricism and ebullient orchestration. Matt’s fundamental optimism permeates the tracks, making the upbeat ones positively exuberant and the plaintive ones hopeful all the same. He wears his influences as well as his heart on his sleeve - sometimes I think I can determine the exact artists that inspired certain songs - but his obvious talent and conviction demand that listeners accept and evaluate this EP on its own terms. Plus, it just sounds good; its crisp production shames some recent efforts by famous bands who have yet to master the art of digital recording.

The first song I heard by Window View was Thing Called Love, and it is absolutely amazing. I bought all the songs without even listening to the 30 second smaples, because I knew I wasn't going to be dissappointed. All the songs are just beautiful :D

Definetly an artist who knows where he's headed. The music is written and sung with the knowledge that many people will hear his voice and message, and he sings with confidence. Solid artist, with room to grow, mature, and make great music. Keep an eye on where this goes....
