iTunes Review

Once upon a time the Dandy Warhols were signed to a major label and attempted to become the next “cult” band that broke through to a wider audience. However, these Portland, Oregon rockers were always too weird, too arty, and too likely to go off on buzzing and droning tangents that would alienate all but the hearty few who truly enjoyed a slightly macabre soundtrip. In 2008, the Dandys have their own record label and stretch out and experiment to their own self-indulgent delight. They’ve dropped a bit of their junkie-rocker swagger in favor of quake-shifting sonics that often sound like several songs playing at once. “Talk Radio” is based on a simple chord progression that is consistently rattled by sound effects and sudden instrumental detours before returning to its primal pattern. “Welcome to the Third World” turns to Talking Heads funk for bizarre twists in sound. “Now That You Love Me” uses a muddled production to obscure its straight-forward pop basis. Backwards instrumentation adds another layer of trippiness to the banjos, sawed-off violins, and buried chanting of “Love Song.” And nearly 15 minutes of noodling through “Musee D’Nougat” exposes the band’s desire for complete sonic indulgence.

I Want Some Nougat (Valiummy)

This album is definitely a risk, but one that was well worth taking. The Dandy Warhols experiment with a more mature, albeit trippier, sound, from the complex, chant like layers of "The World Come On," to the satirical "Welcome to the Third World," to the amazingly accurate "Valerie Yum," to the Revolution Number Nine-esque "Musee D'Nougat." Definitely worth a listen just for the unique sonic adventure. You will either love it or hate it, but you will not regret giving it your time.

Not bad at all

I'm a pretty new fan of the Dandy Warhols. Though this album isn't as good as "Welcome to the Monkey House" , I think that it is a pretty cool album. Songs like " The world come on" and "Love Song" are a sure sign that the can still do Alternative pretty well. All in all, a great album. Keep on rocking, Dandy Warhols!

A resounding yes

This album manages to be both unique and listenable, which is something too many bands fail on both accounts. It far outshines the last album, which is no easy feat. I feel like this album both takes me back to the 70's while being something completely new and fresh. There are people in go-go boots dancing in my head in outer space and I don't even do drugs. Chill, smooth, and psychedelic. I am loving it.

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Portland, OR

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Often compared to the druggy psychedelic pop of the Velvet Underground, the Dandy Warhols do possess more than just a passing resemblance to Lou Reed and company at times, but elements of such modern rockers as Love and Rockets and Ride can be detected in their sound as well. Formed in Portland, OR,...
