Contemporary Hip Hop
by Jorgito (host of the GAL-Radio Show)BUC & The Preecher - Smelling Salts-EP (Soulualism)
"You say hip hop ain't for the old" says one line, and indeed one really can get the impression that mainstream hip hop degenerated into a penetrating male teeage power imagination whereas underground hip hop's whining about just that without respite, but without doing anything about it. Thus, one could get the impression that hip hop neither intended for grown-up people nor has ever come of age. Once you've got this impression, you can either resign or take this as an incentive to put into practice your vision of contemporary hip hop. BUC & The Preecher did the latter. Having been in the business for more than twenty years now these upright dawgs recently debuted with their EP entitled "Smelling Salts".
Flashback: Way back in 1991 Elliott Miller and Paul Pinnock called themselves Elliott Ness and Professor Paul and alongside Greg "Speedy D" Brown they formed the trio E.S.P. These guys were discovered and brought together by no other than Chubb Rock, but although they had a five-albums contract they only could put out one album due to serious health issues. Then times turned calm and they resorted to producing.
It’s all water under the bridge. Since the golden age a lot of things have changed in the world of hip hop which Elliot and Paul percive as a void, and this void has been the spark to for them to work together again, precisely as BUC & The Preecher.
The first result of this new beginning is "Smelling Salts". This EP was put together in their own direction, it was released on their own label and goes without featuring any hot artists. Audacious. But this just goes to show how strongly BUC & The Preecher felt forced not just to put a good face on the matter, but to actively and independently bridge a gap of twenty years. This has been accomplished by the styles which remind one of Kurtis Blow or Melle Mel, as well as by the beats which are neatly produced to make them work both in the club and at home. So "Smelling Salts" is a record for those who have grown up without giving up hope.
From a Podcast Host...
by trueschoolradiothese cats are NICE with theirs! i get submissions ALL THE TIME from cats that have NO product whatsoever. it was a nice change to hear from these guys. the ethereal production meshed with the beats and classic cadences was a nice break from the club "wah-wah" that i get sent all the time! i'm gonna go ahead and rate these guys up at the top, along with the OneBeLo's, Blu & Exile's and Lucid Music's that i have the pleasure of reviewing every so often. bless to Born and the crew for the copy. if y'all don't pick this up for the 8 bucks, you're missing a steal! and check out trueschoolradio.com for ALL your hip hop pointers!
bless.

When all hope was gone
by DJ Krazy of Vibes46.com (Internet is fantastic, where ever you live or travel there is always a way to explore or make connections. Not always is the information the kind you wanna get your hands on, but with the latest album from Buc & The Preecher located in Brooklyn N.Y. you are fortuned. Or should I say blessed. It was when all hope was gone. I had just heard Masta Killa´s “Made in Brooklyn” when this fantastic diary of well spoken words appeard in my headphones as a demo. First thing that hit me was that this album was different in theese times when everybody wanna be a winner on televised songcontests. There is darkness, light and most of all the voice of everyday humanbeings with love for life. “Miss me with that” pretty much is the song to play when you are being forced to gain information that is more than necessary. The everyday life comes out in “When we roll”. “Cry out” or scream out his name lyrically reminds me about “Lean on me” (Bill Withers) and that is indeed without any drugs before listening. ”HipHop is back” this was a hit in the 80´s,90´s and now 2008 when we had doubts. There´s material here for the oldschool generation and for the new kids on the block. The stories are smart and there´s a message and dedication to the creator or should we just call him God; the man who gave us life, love and celebration.
Much Love. Dj Krazy
