Succulent dance-pop

by pulverize

The debut full-length from this Colorado three-piece is a potent medley of New Wave synth worship, soaring guitar melodies and Britpop-inspired crooning—sure to kick you into auto-dance. Tracks like Dawn Raider and Nite Vision make it absolutely clear: these guys are here to see you drop it like it’s on fire. But you may find yourself more intrigued by their more subdued songs, like the torpid, ocean-grooved Who’s Innocent or the almost sorrowful Top That!. Catchiness abounds, so don’t be surprised to catch yourself humming, say, the chorus on Control as you get ready for another epic night at the club.

This album has impressed me. Though most tracks are party-ready, others are best enjoyed in solitude, with the lights off. It’s that sort of versatility that’s hard to come by in the dance genre. More importantly, the songs are just plain well-written; there’s no filler to speak of.

My only complaint, albeit a minor one, is certain lack of acoustic cohesion across the album. The later tracks sound like they were recorded with different equipment, or at least during a different session. They don’t sound as good either. But don’t worry, they still rock, and this album is still worth your hard-earned money.

In a fun album that has arrived 25 years too late, the Renegades take you on a trip into a future that has scarcely existed since the 80s. They relish in the use of faux futuristic synth and distant hollow sounds and this produces an epic mood and a sense of drama throughout. Though some elements, such as the heavy reverb on the vocals, can border on sounding cheesy these days, the Renegades are able to craft a remarkably cohesive album that is definately worth the purchase.

Whoah!!!

He gets into his car, gives himself a last checking nod in the rearview mirror, revs the engine and bombs down the road. He doesn’t care about anything because there is nothing to care about. His elbow leans out of the open window. His head is reclined, enjoying the airstream. His right foot is completely pushed through. His fingers are tapping on the steering-wheel. He is totally satisfied…

That’s the pictures I had first in my head while listening to the Renegades, two guys beyond the sea. Just try it yourself - this must be made for drifting A.W.A.Y.
