iTunes Review

Ryan Adams has an encyclopedic knowledge of classic rock and he can press those influences into service wherever he sees fit. His songwriting has often had a comforting familiarity to it, with guitar riffs and melodies that hint towards past glories. With an tight efficient band behind him in the Cardinals, whose pedal steel master Jon Graboff deserves special distinction, Adams delivers this tight, focused 12 song collection. “Born into the Light” begins things with a gorgeous placidity, a lulling sense of sunshine that’s further reflected in the lyrics where an anxious young man settles into the calm perspective of middle age. The modest funk of “Fix It” turns towards R&B, with guitarist Neal Casal (a deserving solo artist himself) adding an extra edge. “Magick” crashes a few guitar chords for a look towards Adams’ punk roots with global apocalypse hanging over the exultant beat. By the time Adams arrives at the piano ballad “Stop,” he’s bleeding all over the tracks, determined to turn his often controversial life around to something he can manage over the long haul.

He's too in love to make good music any more

I gotta say, I am not a fan of this album. Initially, I was really excited about Ryan's new album and jumped at the chance to buy it as soon as it came out. Since then, I've only listen to the whole CD once and it is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. It hurts me to say this, seeing as I adore Ryan and his music, especially Heartbreaker, but I think he's lost his edge since he's all in love and married to Mandy Moore now. The man just needs some pain in his life again!

I don't get it...

I finally got around to picking up this record...

As others have prefaced, I love RA, and the Cardinals too. Stone Roses and Jacksonville are some of my favorite records. The sound, production, and songwriting on these records is masterful.

However, after listening to this record several times (and really forcing myself to) my taste and opinion has not changed. As we know, for all of their greatness, no RA record is perfect from start to finish - there are alway songs that seem to miss the mark - unfinished, hastily recorded, or just mediocre songs. Cardinalology, unfortunately is a collection of these, and nothing sticks out.

If you are new to Mr. Adams's music, I suggest you pick up something else - either the ones I described above, or his earlier work (albeit, with a little research). Ryan Adams is a great talent, and his music has changed my life. He will rock you too, but not with this record.

Not Ryans Best (To Me)...

Love Ryan and all he has done. To give such a talented dude less than 3 stars is a Sin. So I will not sin and just say this album has one of my favorites. (Evergreen) and unfortunately many of my least favorites. He still pens the best lyrics and has a great raw voice. Keepers for me are Evergreen, Stop, Go Easy, Magick, Let us Down Easy & Like yesterday. It's too bad Ryan is MIA because his music is missed. I guess the tune Evergreen says it all " And Maybe find someone to lay some roots down next to you - time to stop moving around". I hope he makes his roots and comes back to grace the poor shlups who find solace in his music...
