iTunes Review

Jeff Mangum's second album as Neutral Milk Hotel is a masterpiece, Inspired by a reading of the Ann Frank story, and with the help from the Elephant Six recording collective (Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control), In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a personal meditation on the rich joys of life and the tragedy of death. Triumphantly martial brass arrangements, warbly musical saw, and sweet piano augment the rough buzz of Mangum's basic acoustic guitar strum, but it's his glorious, wailing voice that soars over all of it as the album progresses seamlessly from bombastic rock songs ("Holland, 1945," "Ghost") and achingly earnest mid-tempo numbers ("King of Carrot Flowers Part 1") to a brass-led dirge ("The Fool") reminiscent of the jazz funeral that march through the streets of Mangum's native Louisiana. To hear this album once is to love it forever.

The Love I Have Can Only Be Heard, Not Read

The odd sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel make my heart cry sweet, sweet tears of joy. The way in which Jeff Mangum carries his voice is like an orgasmic, noisy passion bursting in my ears, thereby being perceived by my temporal lobe as a voice channeling that of God himself. Lyrics flowing with emotion, cryptic and beautiful, sorrowful and euphoric. If only I could relay to you accurately the love that I have for this band in my crappy writing. The only possible way for you to truly understand is to buy this album. Now. Neutral Milk Hotel rocks.

My friend burned me a copy of this album. I have diverse taste such as Angels and Airwaves, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens and so on. but I really wasn't impressed with these guys. I mean some of the songs sound ok, but I don't see how anyone could say this is the best cd ever. The melodies are pretty mediocre and there is not much interest to the instrumentation. Not trying to diss the band. They are not the worst ever. Maybe its just me, but the band seems like they are trying to hard to be very indie. The best thing about the album is actualy the album cover artwork. It is a really cool picture. I respect fans of these guys but I would definetly not recommend this album.

The self-described "fuzz-folk" project Neutral Milk Hotel was one of the primary outgrowths of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of like-minded, lo-fi indie groups — including the Apples (in stereo), the Olivia Tremor Control and Secret Square — who shared musicians,...
