Album Review

Though dismissed by the group themselves as "f*cking awful" and "the worst record made this year," the Beta Band's self-titled album otherwise defies simple criticism — seemingly infinite in its sonic complexities, it's an album of remarkable density and detail, a brashly schizophrenic freak-out which weaves its way throughout the history of rock & roll. Pop, blues, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop — they're all here, sometimes even colliding within the same song; the disc somehow sounds almost completely different with each successive listen, consistently revealing new layers and possibilities. It all constantly runs the risk of collapsing into complete self-indulgence, but in its way the Beta Band's genius is their wanton disregard for niceties like verses, choruses, and melodies; rejecting musical theory in favor of the chaos theory, the album's neither a masterpiece nor a mess, but both.

A Key Beta Band Album

by Willabur

This album is all over the place and bizarre at times, but it extremely enjoyable. It's their first album and I think its good that they experimented with it. It gives me an understanding of what the Beta Band was all about.

A big step down from 3EPs but not without merit

This is some weird, weird music, folks. Some of the tracks simply degenerate into "noise." Brokenupadingdong, for example, starts out with a perfect, bubbly rhythm but eventually turns into an unfriendly din. Some other songs are even less easy on the ears. There are some high points, however, leading me to assign the album the generous rating of four stars: The Hard One is as haunting and beautiful as anything on The Three EP's, It's Not Too Beautiful is almost up to the quality of Three EP's, Number 15 isn't bad and Round the Bend is, if nothing else, entertaining in a comedic sense.

Their best album!

I waiver between this and 3-EPs as my favorite release by The Beta Band, but both are exceptional. Do as I suggested to my wife, skip over the Beta Band Rap and listen to the rest of the album first. It is one of the most unique albums I've ever heard, and it is catchy in ways that you would never expect.

Formed: 1997 in Edinburgh, Scotland

Genre: Alternative

Their sound veering from post-grunge balladry to funk and ambient breakbeat to Madchester acid house, the Beta Band emerged on the British scene as (nominally) a pop group with few similarities to any other act going. Formed around three friends originally from Edinburgh — vocalist Stephen Mason,...
