iTunes Review

“The problem of leisure/What to do for pleasure.” Part of the Gang of Four’s project was rendering such lyrics catchy while stretching the framework of punk rock itself. 1979 Entertainment!’s attack on rock clichés dovetailed with their inquisitive sociopolitical philosophy which took on everything from the evening news to sexual attitudes to why so many other bands sang about romance so often. Go4’s music continues to influence recent bands with its adaptation of funk and reggae elements, not to mention Andy Gill’s scraping, skittering guitar. Maybe the single most significant document of the postpunk movement, Entertainment! speaks both for itself and an entire new way of thinking. This remastered deluxe edition contains the four single sides contained on the Yellow EP,” plus two alternate versions, the previously unreleased song “Blood Free” and an in-concert “Sweet Jane.”

Pre Punk At Its Best

by Graze Anatomy

Not exactly punk, but more of that hitting sound that developed from prior morphs like The Animals, The Kinks, Iggy & The Stooges...Gang of Four (their name coming from a Chinese political group) provided a paradigm shift paving the way for the then-modern punk era. Members of the band went on to soloist or studio careers even producing the Red Hot Chili Pepper's first album. It might not be your favorite album of all time, but certainly the history, sound, and lyrics make this a must-have for any serious collector of music. If you're a hipster living in Brooklyn or SIlver Lake - and you have your skinny jean costume on right now - this is also a good choice for your because it will make you look soooo cool when you're fake friends ask you who is this playing right now?

Excellent

It's hard to complain about this album. Regardless of your views on Marxism, the music itself scores absurdly high on both the originality and the quality scales. This album is a cornerstone of any post-punk collection.

Political Party Album

by vrocco

Before a note is played, the cover art divulges Gang of Four's ultra-political bent, and it's hard to ignore lyrics like those in "I Found That Essence Rare", which address the cultural impact of H-bombs and bikinis. But what makes "Entertainment!" so unique is the funky, punky, uncategorizable sound that sweeps along all the soapbox statements before they can become buzzkill. In fact, the music often makes the protests seem sarcastic, even humorous, except during the most intense improvisation, such as the psychedelic drone that opens "Anthrax". Much like the first Violent Femmes album rode an original, angry-yet-catchy set of songs to the heights of cult stardom, Gang of Four's "Entertainment!" hasn't stopped building momentum since it was released, and it seems like the feedback, slicing guitars, plucky bass, and zig-zag rhythms are going to abruptly resume even after the album ends. And they can too--just press "Play" again...
