iTunes Review

By far the most complete anthology of Sam Cooke’s career, Portrait of a Legend traces his work from gospel stardom with the Soul Stirrers to the many sides of his secular transformations of all that “soul” could mean. A dizzying stack of beloved pop hits (“You Send Me,” “Chain Gang,” “Another Saturday Night,” “Cupid”) takes its place here, but Portrait also offers the rough-hewn blues translations that Cooke often issued as singles (“Bring It On Home to Me”) as well as, of course, the complex pinnacle of his work. “A Change is Gonna Come” appears in its full version with the “downtown” verse intact; it remains an anthem of struggle and hope whose power has never waned. This set is a must for even casual fans of soul and rock music.

30 Greatest Hits- Sam Cooke Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964

by Ms. Joy!

The cost in purchasing this cd is pennies compared to the soul it delivers. And, Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" is the ultimate, the culmination, of his work. Ironic, it was his hit at the time of his immature and reckless death. This song alone is worth far more than the cost of this entire compilation. If tears do not come to your heart when you hear tis, his last hit, then you have no heart; importantly, no soul. His lovely voice lives on.

Great Compilation

I have always loved Sam Cooke's amazing voice and style of music. This album does a great job of highlighting his hits as well as giving a broad sweep of his roots and what he achieved. Youll finish the album wishing he had lived a full life, so we could see what else he was capable of.
