iTunes Review

The back-to-the-garage future is perfectly exemplified by this 1997 release by Portland's Dandy Warhols, their sophomore release and first for a major label. But while the ghosts of Lou Reed and Velvets past clearly influenced more than just their moniker, the echoes of contemporary UK bands like Ride are also evident, helping this release become a surprising critical and commercial success in Europe. Photographer Dave LaChappelle's stylish video for "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" garnered the band some stateside attention as well, helping the Dandy's expand beyond their devoted cult following via music that encompassed elemental drones ("I Love You"), the cinematic "Whipping Tree," and such neo-psych intrigues as "Green," "Orange," and "Pete International Airport."

Formed in Portland, OR,...
