Karajan's Moldau

by Pirateman3

Simply wonderful, as always. It is a shame that the complete Ma Vlast was never recorded, and that is why I gave it a 4/5 stars. The album just seems incomplete without the rest. Also, the inability to buy this incomplete Ma Valst separate worked against the score. I looked though several other recordings of the Moldau and all but one other fail in comparison (the other's album I cannot find nor remember and still illudes me today). The quality of these pieces is extraordinary (What else could you expect from Karajan?). -But you will have to fork out $12 for the couple of pieces you bought the album for :]

Karajan Conducts Dvorak and Smetana

by Maestro's Corner

While Karajan never actually managed to record the entire cycle from Ma Vlast, his rendering of Smetana's classic Moldau is among the best I've heard. Often, Karajan showiness masks his ability to exract the finest of sounds from the Berliner Philharmoniker. His handling of Dvorak's masterwork, Symphony No. 9, seems to fit Karajan quite nicely. While his directing of the andante lacks the kind of elegance of other recordings, the phrasing is accurate, and the tempi are consistent throughout. Where he really shines, though, is on the final movement of that symphony. The brass are pounding, and it just seems that Karajan is egging them on, as the symphony comes to its dramatic conclusion. The other works included here include the 8 Slavonic Dances and the Dances from the Bartered Bride. Nothing special with those, and it is unfortunate that one cannot simply by the Moldau and the 9th seperatley, but alas, that is itunes. Overall, an excellent collection of Karajan, and if only for the Moldau and the 9th, worth your 11.99
