iTunes Review
Portishead's debut album Dummy represents one of the finest, freshest releases of the '90s. Its film noir schematic, its stuttering breakbeats, its danceable yet experimental leanings, its sexual tension provided chillingly by singer Beth Gibbons-all were perfectly blended by Geoff Barrow's intuitive ability to never lean too heavy in any one musical direction. (Before hooking up with Gibbons, Barrow worked as a tape operator for Massive Attack and producer for Tricky, two acts that Portishead learned much from.) Shortly after its release, "Sour Times" became the unexpected hit, an oft-kilter spy film soundtrack pledge of alienated love fueled by strangulated guitar riffs (provided by former Jazz Messenger Adrian Utley), understated turntable samples and keyboard washes that slipped gothic motifs into its decadent nightclub setting. The rest of the album is just as satisfying. "It Could Be Sweet," "Wandering Star," and "It's A Fire" all work similar ground with hypnotic results.

Best of the 90's
by SixpinGroundbreaking trip-hop from the 90's, I hadn't thought of this record in over 10 years. I had a craving for it, bought it, and completely remembered what I love about 90's music! A must have!
Un-freakin-believable
by young teamA truly mystifying and amazing album. Undoubtedly the single most important statement of the trip-hop movement, more so even than anything Massive Attack's "Blue Lines" or Tricky's "Maxinquaye" (though those are both mind-blowing albums as well). Spooky, ethereal, catchy, rhythmic, apocalyptic, deranged. It's not for everyone, but those who understand and enjoy Dummy truly have discovered something special. Easily one of the most important albums of the '90s, or of any time for that matter.
Personal favorites include "Strangers," "Wandering Star," "Roads," "Biscuit," and "Glory Box." To be honest, though, the entire album is so masterfully done that the entire thing demands repeat listens. Their sophomore album was brilliant too, but Dummy defines my love for this band and explains how I was able to wait all those years for Third.
Great atmosphere.
by Federico UnoI am not very generous in regards to giving out 5 stars but this album came close. Can i say 4.5? The somber cigarette-smoke filled atmposhpere that this cd generates is fantastic. Its dark and moody. Its classic. There are a few stand-out tracks on the album but without a doubt the whole thing can be played end to end time and again. A must buy.
