My new favorite album

Wow, terrific debut album! I don't speak French, and I'm not usually a fan of bands that are this heavily vocals-driven, prefering more instrumentation. But c'est la vie, this album is mostly wonderful. Nous Non Plus is two women and at least one guy, and they all combine their efforts on vocals. In general the gals take the lead, such as on my favorite cut here, the breezy, irrestistable "Monokini." "Le ballade de Tourette" is another favorite, achingly beautiful. Sometimes they combine efforts, as on "Premier baiser," which like the best of the songs here calls to mind the 60's, despite my having no real familiarity with French pop of that era to explain why this is so. When the guys take the lead, they tend to drip sarcasm, especially on the extended Paris Hilton double-entendre, "One Night in Paris," or the erotic but overly-long "Le chateau," maybe the weakest cut here. The group rocks out without stumbling on "Lawnmower Boy," which has a sort of glam-rock feel, while "Fille atomique" is sure to remind some of a French-speaking B-52's. The album ends with a dreamy instrumental, "Apres-soleil," which subtly reprises some of the musical themes from the album and whets my appetite for a little more instrumental work on the next album. Perhaps they are borrowing heavily from French pop, I don't know, but that's a genre which gets very little air play in the U.S. Nous Non Plus shows remarkable range and versatility for a young band, and while the playing is at times thin (80's-style synth solos where the songs cry out for guitar on "Lawnmower Boy" and "Fille atomique," for instance), the songwriting, inspired vocals and just plain talent is so strong that I don't mind. They have a great ear for a hook, but it never sounds faux, even if they aren't really French. The future could be very bright indeed for this band.

amazing!!

cheesy title for a cheesy band. but it's the good cheese (gruyere perhaps). this doesn't do them justice, they are truely one of the only that i have seen who is better in person than on cd. i was sad that they didn't have 99 red balloons on here, because they do it splendidly. i can only assume it would be some sort of infringement... but i'd be all for a song titled, "rouge, rouge, et rouge tout le monde" that sounded oddly like 99 red balloons and could be downloaded for free of some "fan site"... just throwing that out there...

love them. can't wait to here more from them.
