Album Review

Following the stripped-down rock & roll of Whenever We Wanted, the somber Human Wheels comes as a bit of shock. Throughout his mid-'80s peak, John Mellencamp infused his best work with despair, but he never has sounded as beaten and broken as he does on Human Wheels. It's not just that the record sounds murky and bleak, but his singing is weary and the lyrics are filled with resignation. Consequently, Human Wheels isn't a particularly easy listen, even though it doesn't depart from his signature sound, but it is a rewarding one, and the record is arguably his most affecting. [The 2005 remastered reissue adds one bonus track: a version of "When Jesus Left Birmingham" featuring vocals from Sounds of Blackness.]

One of Mellencamp's Best albums!

by Audiofreak955

Not an album you often think of first when you think of Mellencamp, but this one has an incredible style and impressive songwriting. Now that it's remastered, it's even better. "Human Wheels' pulls you in, and sets you up with an ambience of (as another reviewer stated) the human condition.

IMO, this is an underrated album in the mainstream, and now that it sounds as fresh and new as it does, it's well-worth another listen.

One of his best.

Great Artistic Music

by James2006

I have been a fairweather Mellencamp fan over the years, I tend to turn off his hits when they come on the radio. However Human Wheels stands out as an absolute masterpiece. The production is so meticulous, and the performance so measured that the artistic quality of the music pops to the forefront, more so than any othe Mellencamp CD. I know this must have been a huge disappointment when it didn't do as well commercially as Mellencamp had hoped. If you listen to the CD in its entirety you will see what I mean and not be disappointed at all. The songs range from pop to funk rock to gospel rock. This CD stands all tests of time.

Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late '70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed,...
