Tour de force

by Arnold Diaz

The energy displayed in "Helios" is enough reason to fall in love with Manring's music, but the fact that Manring can move you to tears with some of his works is absolutely astounding. It would be wrong to think of Manring as just a bass virtuoso, though he is. In fact, he is a pretty darn good songwriter, too, and though not all his works are guaranteed to please, he can, in fact, bring you on a very engaging rollercoaster ride of emotions. This is VERY worth listening to, time and again...

Innovative virtuosity at its best. A lot more than bass guitar playing, and a lot more than jazz. Labels are difficult at this level of music. Mr. Manring also seems versatile enough to enhance a range of musical styles, as evidenced by his contributions on Sohre’s latest album, The Night Between. Overall, Soliloquy is excellent, and likely to please the intelligent, critical listener with a high need for novelty.
