Album Review

Beyond the Mind's Eye is Grammy award-winning keyboardist/composer Jan Hammer's first solo album in over five years. The 14 tracks, composed for Miramar's new video album, are different than the Video soundtrack. The audio release is remixed, features extended arrangements, and has a bonus vocal track sung by Chris Thompson of The Manfred Mann Group. Known for his Miami Vice music, Hammer provides a potent fusion which is perfect for this arena where modern music meets the visual arts. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, All Music Guide

Memories

by cgimovieman

I remember Beyond The Mind's Eye from around the year it came out or just after. A friend of mine had a VHS of it. At the time, for a computer animation presentation it was pretty cool and I loved it. I immediately went out and found a copy for myself. One thing that really struck me about it though was the music. I really loved it. In many cases even more so than the animation. My friend's brother had this album at the time, but this was the days before iTunes, the internet, and burning copies of CD's. I looked everywhere for it in stores and even online in the late 90's when the internet was coming of age, but never found it. Everywhere listed it as "out of print" or "unavailable". While doing a search for something else the other day this came up in my results. I was shocked and immediately bought it. Great memories. Listening to it today, it does sound slightly dated. The music is a little synthesized sounding and a bit etherial overall. But I still think it's great. "Seeds" is by far my favorite track and was my favorite animation segment as I remember too. The vocal version is a bit weird though. My other favorites are "Magic Theater" and "Brave New World", but I really love them all. Glad to have found this. Wish iTunes could put more obscure soundtracks and scores on here like this. I love music from TV, film, and other mediums like that. Other categories like rock, pop, alternative, and otherwise always seem to get the bulk of the albums and tracks though. Still, glad to see this available!

The Best!!!

We have had the VHS version of the animation since it came out. Now that the music is available on DVD it is that much more a reason for people to get it. The DVD is rare, and only still available through a few sites. If you can find it - GET IT !!! It takes this CD to an entirely new level. Jan Hammer at his very best, and animation - improved in the DVD vs the old VHS. This is one I really wish they could remaster for new animation on DVD - maybe in 3-D! MUST HAVE!

Remember when this was the display video for all TV's?

Seemed like every major electronic store was using this video as the demo for all their TV's back in the day. Although very antiquated by todays standards, it was rather cutting edge for it's time. But the soundtrack was incredible and matched perfectly. Throw in the Miami Vice theme song and you have a greatest hits album here.
