haunting and beautiful

by bone83

This record is akin to a rare travelogue through the dark underbelly of the American south. Brooks' stark arrangements, with contemporary and homemade instruments, unscores his ability to turn a phrase and lean away from the obvious. The title is an homage to the post-Napoleonic war 'Black Paintings' of Goya.

Highlights include:
The Silent Coal Town ...the tragic tale of a lover attempting to understand his/her partner. But as the Coal Town is unwilling to give up its secrets, so too is the lover. Dr. Beezler... an homage to a character mentioned in A Strange Limousine, using an instrument Brooks refers to as 'the roboklakker'. Rosalie... a song about the ever changing landscape of the industrial south and its effects on relationships.
