Album Review

By "floor," they mean dancefloor. Where neo-wave bands like the Epoxies are mostly interested in the arch, stylized Devo end of the new wave scene, and Interpol prefers the stylized moodiness of seasoned Joy Division followers, this quintet from the border city of Abbotsford, British Columbia is all about the dancefloor. Pylon, the herky-jerky pride of Athens, GA, is the band most recognizable in You Say Party! We Say Die!, particularly in Becky Ninkovic's ululating shriek of a voice on songs like "The Gap (Between the Rich and the Poor)" and the self-explanatory "He! she! you! me! they! we! us! ok!," and in the muscular thump of the high-in-the-mix rhythm section. That said, some of the songs here manage to engage the listener mostly through that hyperactive danceability and giddy sense of fun. A closer, seated listen reveals some of the tunes, like "Midnight Snack" and "You Did It!," to be little more than a patchwork of riffs and shouted slogans. The best material largely makes up for the weaker tracks, however.

good album

I think band kind of takes off in the right direction where Pretty Girls Make Graves took a turn for the worse. The album has a lot of energy and catchy beats. One thing that I found interesting about this album is how many of the tracks flow together and have a very nice progression of music, accenting a waxing and waning of crescendos (or something like that... that's the only way I can describe it). Listen to some of the tracks in entirety if you can, because 30 second clips don't give you a good idea with what is going on with the songs.

The Gap is a great song and shows some depth to the band's social interests. Some elements to the music are very cool 80'sish punk scene. New Meets Old would be a good description I guess.

This band is so much fun, thats really the best way to describe them! The have so much energy and passion, I absolutely love them. Its too bad that Steven O'Shay was banned from playing in the US for five years (they won't say why but the band has a rep for doing absolutely anything on stage!) because they are an amazing show!!

Sporting quite possibly the worst band name since Clap Your Hands Say Yeah — particularly since it so readily lends itself to snarky drive-by non-reviews along the lines of "I say 'forget it!'" — You Say Party! We Say Die! is actually an enjoyably goofy retro-new wave time. Blending punky...
