Album Review
On 44 Long's third album, frontman Brian Berg continues to evolve as both a songwriter and a musician, blending elements of Americana, indie rock, and classic AM radio fare with strong results. Listeners of Hangover Heights, Pt. 2 will have a hard time dismissing the Portland, Oregon native's trio, as evidenced by winners like the rollicking "Please Don't Love Me Now," the weighty "God Again," and the memorable attitude-driven "You Let Them Win." Augmented by guitarist/bassist Andy Ricker and drummer Cory Burden, 44 Long's third is a perfect fit for fans of fractured pop and well-worth hunting down. ~ John D. Luerssen, All Music Guide

From Someone Who Has Heard It
by dick swankThe third album (but first in seven years) from Portland, Oregon singer/songwriter Brian Berg, who performs and records as 44 Long. As on his two previous albums, various pop and rock textures are represented, but Berg's exuberant guitar work and clever lyrics are on display in each tune. The words are really the thing here, deepening in meaning with each listen, always pointing in the direction of hope even when lamenting the difficulties brought on by the passage of time.
Berg is a talented songwriter and a unique performer whose perfectionist tendencies lead to album release intervals that cause audiences to forget about him, but those same tendencies lead to the creation of some absolutely gorgeous pop gems, as evidenced here.
The best tracks on the album are Everybody Has A Way, a pedal steel-augmented rumination on the ways people get by, and Don't Let Me Die Today, a spare open letter to God from a man with some unfinished business. In a perfect world, songwriting like this would get you a Grammy or at least a series of hit songs. Here, it is simply two bits of near-perfection on a fine album from one of Portland's best and most enduring songwriters.
