Album Review

Warren's quiet, sensitive folk-rock is pleasant and well-produced, but unfortunately that production can't obscure his mediocre songwriting talents. Most notably, he suffers from the common folk-rock ailment of substituting breathy sensuality for bedrock energy. For the Leonard Cohens of the world, weariness is a stock in trade that only enhances a brilliant song but, for second-stringers, the effect of half-whispered lyrics too often serves only to emphasize an unremarkable melody. ...To This Day is not without its highlights, however: The samba-esque "Tomboygirl" contains some of Waren's most charming lyrics, and "I Want Her Faith" is a poignant ballad with nice harmony vocals. Although the music here is thoroughly modern and frequently captivating, one cannot help but wonder how much better most of these songs would be if there was just a little more sting in the delivery.

Performing Songwriter DIY Top 12

The most striking and enjoyable effect of Robert Burke Warren's ...to this day is the push-and-pull contrast of gritty, thickly textured instrumentation and lyrics with Warren's bright, smooth voice and elliptical, elegant melodies. Warren, who spent time as a bassist for the Fleshtones and a year-long stint in London in the musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, revisits his Southern past and familial ties in sooty, vaporous songs. The resulting record is a sometimes celebratory, sometimes discontented trip through family history, guilt, and redemption that mixes the organic and the synthetic, both metaphorically and instrumentally.

The entirety of ...to this day is dogged by ghosts of seduction, of dead forebears, of old time religion, and of the rough life. Warren's lyrical text roams from the "war of northern aggression" on "Jospephus Cries" to the honey-tongued balladry of "Tomboygirl" as he requests to be her "sissy boy". His ready combinations of loops and synthesizers with cello and dobro echo his lyrical style - a contrast of 21st century playful sexuality and 19th century tintype mystery.
