Album Review
A veteran of the Northern California jazz scene, Al Molina is a fine bop-based trumpeter with a strong sound. For this release on his Jazzer label, Molina is featured in a quintet with other S.F. players (trombonist Al Bent, pianist Jeff Pittson, bassist Scott Steed, and drummer Vince Lateano) playing a set of his originals plus Richie Beirach's "Broken Wing." The music is excellent, if not overly adventurous. Some of these tunes deserve to be interpreted by other musicians, and Al Molina should receive much greater recogniton for his playing.
