Beautiful, personal, and really rather catchy

by TrapDoor88

Annie Bauerlein's "Mugsy is Fine" is clearly one very close to her heart. Whether it be with summertime nostalgia of "Blueberry Pancakes" or maternal appreciation in "Ninety-Nine Months", the album stands out in her ability to emphasize relateable feelings in songs about very personal stories. Her lyrics embrace an intimate, casual tone that works well to this end - it's nice to have an artist who sings about their life without sounding self-righteous. The album also finds a nice balance between fun and fond; the catchy "Sue's Mustang" is followed appropriately by the more subdued "Blueberry Pancakes", for example. It's a catchy, autobiographical album that is at the same time about very everyday life. Bad hair days. Embracing spring fever. Do yourself a favor and invest in this album. I'm sure you'll enjoy listen to it again and again as my family and I have.
