SONGS FROM YOUR NEW PALS

by Happy Beckett

"Pearl and the Swine" is my rainy day record, even on a bright, sunny day. Steve once threatened to "come out to your house and beat you up" to a whole radio audience if they didn't know who The Almanac Singers were. He's pretty passionate about Woody Guthrie. Steve's a great songwriter, with a hair trigger temper put on solely for laughs. Fur writes half the songs, and they are also great.

If you never met Woody Guthrie, then you just got a second chance. Steve Werner and Fur Dixon aren't Woody, but close enough. That song they wrote "Back Roads And Blue Skies Now" was written while they were possessed by the spirit of Woody, I'm convinced of that. T3he other songs aren't far off that mark. About half the songs are penned by Fur Dixon and 4sometimes some other guy than Steve. Steve has a darker verse and always a great deal of hope in the chorus. Fur Dixon's songs know what love is about, and I get a pretty good idea listening to them. When they write together, watch out. Great combination.

And when these two sing live, if you bring a tape recorder and think real hard that you are on a front porch in Appalachia, you will turn into Alan Lomax for a minute, cause the sound you hear is about as commercial as blueberry pancakes and s'mores made over an open campfire at Big Bear.

Theme Songs for your Next Road Trip

Perfects songs to sing along with as you drive the open highway. The lyrics are wonderful and Fur and Steve pick and harmonize like buttah'.
