Album Review

Since the dismal sales of Colin Hay's 1990 release Wayfaring Sons, none of his solo albums have been released in America, and that's a shame in this case, for there is much here for adult contemporary radio to embrace. On several tracks, Hay demonstrates he hasn't lost the ability to write a clever, catchy pop tune. This is nowhere more evident than the stirring "My Brilliant Feat," which is a commentary on the ups and downs of his own musical career. Interspersed throughout the album, however, are a handful of acoustic numbers that sound utterly depressing and uninspired. Nonetheless, fans of Colin Hay's unforgettable voice will find much to like here.

Best of the lot!

I want to cast another vote for this one as his best. I have enjoyed Colin's music since his days with Men At Work. Of all his solo recordings I feel this has the strongest writing lyrically and melodically. Also, his most approachable set of songs for anyone unfamiliar with his music. This one really deserved a lot more attention!

Favorite Colin

I own all of Colin Hay's albums and this is my absolute favorite! So sad that he isn't appreciated more. His work with MAW is/was great, but his solo stuff soars high above it all.

Wonderful

As to why Colin Hay has been ignored as a great songwriter is beyond me. While his initial fame was in the Men at Work pehenomenon of the early 1980's, his songwriting and muscianship has matured like a fine wine. This is my favorite of his modern project, mostly because it moves past his Men at Work projects. Moreover, Transcendental Highway stands out because of the consistent songwriting. My personal favorites include My Brilliant Feat, Don't Believe you Anymore, Death Row Coversion, I'll Leave the Light On, and Freedom Calling which beautifully includes a wonderful Celtic influence. Colin Hay is simply one of the best. Subtle, powerful, evoking poetry, and good music. This is definitely his best.
