No Void Here.
by LadycakeRichard Mcgraw’s sophomore effort “Song and Void” is definitely somewhat of a departure from his debut album, “Her sacred status, My Militant Needs”. While the themes are similar (heartbreak, death and Jesus are all there),the thinner folk tunes have been replaced by heavier, darker fare. In Song, Richard McGraw finds his true voice in more ways then one. His vocals are a perfect mirror of the emotional torrent he lives in. McGraw is declarative, bemoaning the cruelty of life. With lyrics like “Glory to god and all of his soldiers. Wounded by girl, maimed in the suburbs" ; his Leonard Cohen sense of epic tragedy is evident. Natasha in High School stands out on the record. It’s a sunnier song, a look at the pain and awkwardness of interpersonal relations in adolescence. Other Gems include: The Masses and the Craftsman, Are You Still, Saint Anthony, and Butter Hill.
