Simply a masterpiece

by Bren41

I write this review having been intimately familiar with this album for 7 years now. Simply put, this is one of those albums that stays with you. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to it all the way through, but I can say that I always go back to it. In thinking about why, there is the obvious: thoughtful, powerful and emotive lyrics with great melody, complex song structures and driving crescendoes that wash over you like a hot shower. Then there are reasons that are less obvious. This album has an incredible atmosphere. It carries the pace of a thick and humid summer day. All of these songs work together as an incredibly cohesive unit, and each is appreciated more in the context of the entire work. The experience from cover to cover is really a journey of contemplation, sorrow, joy and release. It's reflective, but never whiny or masochistic. It is at times both melancholy and rallying, but even at its most sullen it never gets down on itself. For me personally, it has been the kind of album that extends a hand when life knocks you down. I recommend starting with the "The Secret Nine", which explodes after the 30 second preview given here - also "May I Have This Dance" is a stunning love letter, and "Brilliance", features one of my favorite lyrical verses anywhere:

The brilliance of the rocks below
I'm in control at the edge on my own
Arguments and solace from
The book inside the dresser drawer
Curled up on the bathroom floor
And Billy's on the radio
If Lady Day could only know
How she's saving me now

good and classic

way better than their amateurs and professionals. Pretty good and classic.

A truly great (and final) Penfold album.

This is a genuinely sincere and emotional album. It's softer and less whiny overall then what most emo kids crave nowa'days, but then again most emo kids have no conception of what real emo music used to be, they think it's the modern trype prevailing on MTV now.....this album is not "pop punk emo", it's more based on the rougher edged "hard core" foundation of really good old emo....mineral....old appleseed cast, braid, etc....but Penfold uses a brighter and more orchestrated instrumentation in this effect. Aka: more cinematic. I also recommend checking out the one album that was done after this one after they lost a member) and changed their band name to: 'The Moirai', who had one album before they finally called it quits...both are great pieces of music and will grow on most people who are brave enough to wear their heart on their sleeve. One song recommendation? My fav here is probably: 'May I have this dance' - TRACK #7
