Album Review
On the sultry title track of her new independently released breakout recording, Let Me Love You, Rena Scott is right at home, singing soulfully about the first spark of romance. Yet the seductive invitation taps into something much deeper, reflecting the passion of her relationship to audiences worldwide over a fascinating musical lifetime. This includes singing in her teens with the Temptations and Aretha Franklin and touring the world in the '80s as a featured member of the Crusaders. Although the less than stellar track mixes make her vocals seem more distant than they should be — and she sometimes plays it too "cutesy little girl" when she actually has a rich, soulful voice — Let Me Love You is for the most part a sensual and heartfelt expression of Scott's professional and romantic ups and downs. The moods are best typified by the dreamy, swaying tropical cool of "A Love Thang" and the easy funk ballad "Good to Me." Despite its handful of flaws, this disc would make an ideal soundtrack for a romantic and intimate summer night. [A DualDisc edition was released in 2005.]
