Album Review

While Seth Bernard's second album Constellation seemed like a conscious effort to better the precocious eclecticism of his impressive debut, Hello Fellow Travelers, with its melodic wanderlust and use of studio trickery, his third set, Being This Being, marks a decisive stylistic about face. There's a gentle simplicity to Being This Being in its production and arrangements that's becoming to Bernard's songs; the recording captures the natural ambience of a handful of musicians playing together in a room, and the performances are concise and expertly modulated, with plenty of subtle give and take and fine playing from Bernard and his cohorts that leaves plenty of welcome breathing room. As on his previous albums, Bernard is free with his philosophical views on Being This Being, but the more subdued aural frameworks on these sessions give his more serious musings a greater depth and the whimsical numbers a taste that's less sugary and more satisfying. Being This Medium has the texture of a proudly homegrown product, from the occasional mild creaks in the performances to the hand-crafted sleeve, and in this case the rough edges make the final results more satisfying — this is {Bernard}'s most pleasurable and compelling album to date.

homegrown songwriting at its best. coming out of northern michigan, seth is joined by the lovely Daisy May on harmonies as the two belt out sassafras and sinamaroo. Seth digs deep into culture with his awe inspiring Heavy Hand Rag, while his songwriting takes center stage with dinosaur. a breath of fresh air. Please go see them live!

Once in a Blue Moon

Some of the nicest songs I've heard in some time, coincidentally created by one of the nicest guys I've met in a long time. I can't believe Seth Bernard and Daisy May aren't more well-known... This album is well-crafted, but if you're in the Michigan area, I would highly recommend attending a live show to get the full experience. "Dinosaur" was easily one of the best live songs I've ever heard/seen.

Original, Sly Folk Music - LOVE IT

Seth Bernard, and his musical compatriot Daisy May, are refreshing folk musicians. They avoid a lot of the typical whiney "woe is me" themes that too many 20-something folkies drab on about before disappearing into obscurity. The songs on this album are fresh, fun, clever, and pure. For a relative youngster, Seth is very close to finding his voice, if he hasn't already. A great album. Be sure to check out his album with Daisy May.
