Typically the words “good” and “viola ensemble music” create an oxymoron, and send most classical musicians, even violists, running for cover. Ljova has somehow managed to break that norm with his album “Vjola: World on Four Strings”. The arrangements are very eclectic, ranging from blues, jazz, folk with a Romanian twist, and contemporary classical. Even though the instrumentation remains fairly constant (lots of viola!) each track manages to create a different texture and character from the last. “Garmoshka” is an exceptional treat on this recording due to the playful waltz duet between the viola and the accordion. The tracks “Coffee + Rum” and “Breakfast Blues” are charming with an old time blues feel. However, Ljova makes the point in “Army of Me” and “Spring Valley Sunset” that this recording is not entirely intended to charm the listener, that his viola has something to say, and you better listen.
