Odd Mishmash
by Happy EngramIt needs to be pointed out here that these are older recordings interspersed with more recent ones. The older ones are identified by their funkier and more anologue feel. The more recent ones are much lighter in tone and feel a bit antisceptic. Many of the older superior recordings here can be found on Ethiopiques Vol IV, one of the best collections I have heard of African music from the late 60's and early 70's eras.
Have to agree, half of this is over-produced, otherwise would have been a 5. Still great music.
by AFanOfMusicI have to agree with the one reviewer who said some of this stuff was "too smooth". You can tell what I mean when you listen to the album. Some of the tracks have that true natural gritty feel and sound (recorded in the late 60s/early 70's) that we loved in Broken Flowers, but the other songs have an extremely polished, clean sound to the point where you miss the true feel of the great ethiopian music of Mulatu's time. Still it's good stuff, but get Mulatu and the Ethiopiques Vol. 4 for the "real" Mulatu sound in my opinion, especially if you liked his Broken Flowers material.
Unique and Stylish
by KEv2086If you like jazz and world music, this is something you should check out. Despite some of the other poor reviews, this CD has some amazing tracks such as Kasalefkut Hulu and Mulatu. There may be one two tracks that don't seem to have the same vibe, but overall this is a very interesting piece of work. I highly recommend it.
