If you must rock, look no further
by RochellyAZYou know, I'm so sick of people saying "oh, maybe not being signed by a major label has kept these guys real". Bob D'Haene is one of the most "real" people I've ever had the pleasure to meet, and if you can't read that from his music, don't listen to it. All a major label signing would do for these guys is ensure that loads more people would grow to love them, and that simply cannot be a bad thing.
This is one of the most talented group of people I've experienced in a long time, and as a listener with pretty eclectic tastes, I'm drawn to the way D'Haene pulls together obviously wildly varying influences into music I can come back to again and again when I get bored with my album du jour. Rock, jazz, punk, disco and funk on, Brother Man!
Personal, Untainted and Brilliant.
by NPKCBrother Man, the record, brings out emotions that usually don’t mix well - or comfortably at least. However, feeling the merger of all of “the emotional stuff” makes you feel alive in every facet.
Bob D’Haene writes thoughtfully and with an impressive range of styles and influences. Rhythmically and harmonically varied, there is certainly something for everyone on this record. As a classically trained musician, I tend to shy away from the Indy “rock album”, or I at least will give it a courtesy listen and pick a favorite track or two to listen to while in the gym. However, I can’t get over the range of this one, the quality of musicianship, and I wonder how this band has slipped through the major label radar. But perhaps that helps to keep their sound as good as it is, as personal and untainted as it feels with every spin.
Personal favorites: Somebody Loves Me, Cracked in Two, Brother Man, Subtle (Paperbacks), and Circle is my current favorite. I’d list them all but that would be tacky. I’m definitely awaiting more from these guys and am grateful for whatever breakups, hardships, and loves in the past and future shape their music so dynamically.
