The first two cuts alone, “Trying to Keep This” and “The Game” have more melodic excitement and tonal variety than most CDs generate in 50 minutes. The driving force is his own restless, intertwined musical and spiritual energy. Open is full of themes of quest and journey (“The Path”, “The Game,” “The Philosopher’s Stone”) accented by variations in tempo and dynamics within each suite-like song. While Open’s songs are memorable and often just plain catchy – some with haunting vocals in the manner of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson, and “Life Under a New Star”’s exhilarating arena-rock opening could have jumped out of your radio in 1977 – Will’s songs rarely confine themselves to the structures of conventional pop.
