Take 3 and call me in the morning

by dogstir

“Take 3” is the third CD from Central Texas’ favorite rock band, Common Ground. In this third installment of the CG trilogy, we again find this rockin’ little Texas band churning out hit after hit that just won’t quit. This is definitely their most solid rock album, and it clearly shows how tight the band had become at this point. The production value equals or exceeds anything you’ve ever heard, and what a smorgasbord of awesome rock songs the producer had to work with!

The CD opens with “Better Life”, a bouncin’, guitar-laden, rock song that you will sing along to. It can’t be helped!

The next tune “Monsters” rocks so hard you’ll quit your job, drop out of school, and teach yourself to play guitar just so you can learn to play along. At 3:05 into this song, if you don’t sing “awaaaaay!” at the top of your lungs, you are not a real rock fan, and possibly not even human.

The rock doesn’t stop with “Take A Bow”. A song that applies to CG as well as anything. This song should make them proud, so go ahead, CG, take a bow.

“Take Me With You” and “Take It From Me” continue the rock standard set from the start of this CD and both are as good as any so-called “commercial” rock that you’ve ever heard. “Marigold”, though, hits the ball out of the park. It’s a homerun of a hit, and it clearly proves that this band can sing just as good as they play.

“Alive” and “Drive” both keep the blood pumping and you can’t stop rocking this CD yet. These are solid, well written, flawlessly performed, true rock songs. There is almost too much good music on this CD, and many artists would have likely saved up songs like these so they could star in their own album.

“Bottle of Dreams” slows things down a bit, but just when you think you might get to catch your breath, you find that you are still singing along. There’s time to relax later… CG’s on, ma.

“Lead the Way” proves this band is more than a one-trick pony. This one has a beautiful vocal track, and a guitar melody that is deceptively simple.

“Perfect” ratchets back up the tempo and reminds you why you like a good rock song: guitars, drums, vocals all mixed together in a recipe that cooks up a delicious tune. Perfect? Absolutely.

“The One” demonstrates CG’s harmonic abilities, and “Oh No” implants in your brain another one of those unforgettably catchy melodies CG is known for.

The CD closes out with “Inside Pt II” -- the more rockin’ version of “Inside” from Fragile, the band’s second CD. Get both and write your thesis comparing and contrasting these two songs, Dr. Rock.

If I could pick only one CD as the soundtrack of my life, this would be it. Take 3? You’ll want all three CG CDs, and even more, after giving this band a listen!
