Classic Piedmont Blues

by BOB-BOB 47

Blues Makes Me Happy (2002) , Bob Fox's second release after Primarily Blues (1990), came out a short three years before the blues guitarist's death in 2005. Fox's musical career began in New York, where, at the age of 17, Fox served as a driver for the Rev. Gary Davis, appeared on a New York radio show with Bill McAdoo where he first played "boogie-woogie harpsichord," and later, was the opening act of the show where Bob Dylan was first hailed by New York Times critics.

The selections on this CD are a combination of covers and original songs. Fox's 12-string rendition of Pete Seeger's "Living in the Country" is the best arrangement you'll ever hear, with "Piedmont Rag," " It's So Easy," and "Furry's Warmup" rounding out the guitar instrumentals. Fox's quirky but unerring vocals shine on "Hey, Hey," "Some Sweet Day," and "Sporting Life," while his skills on boogie woogie piano come through on "Dupree Blues," "Climbing and Screaming," and the title track, composed by Fox.

Some cuts are stronger than others, but overall, hardcore country blues fans will want this CD.
