great music
by Mike SavernNeal Smith, Mark Whitfield, Rick Germanson, and Peter Washington demonstrate great musicianship on this album. Smith is one of the many killin' (but unknown) drummers of the New York scene right now and deserves a lot of credit for his work. He is currently is Cyrus Chestnut's Trio and does other sideman work. He is one the most swingin' drummers on the scene and really knows his stuff. Whitfield is great as always and it is nice to hear him in a straight ahead setting. Rick Germanson is also low on the radar, but is very tasteful on this date. Peter Washington is one of the most in-demand bassists on the jazz scene and is a drummer's best friend. He keeps the time solid and can take an impressive solo, when called upon. I recommend this CD for anyone who is looking for some new guys to check out. We can expect great things from Smith in the future.
