A bold, daring concept album about... primates?
by CernovogThe Who amazed us with Tommy. Pink Floyd mesmerized us with The Wall. Queensrÿche dared to be different with Operation: Mindcrime. Ookla the Mok pours their heart and soul into Smell No Evil.
From goofy to political, Ookla the Mok serves up a concept album as only they can deliver. Every song -- and I *mean* E-V-E-R-Y song -- is interconnected if not in story, then in theme -- that theme being "apes, chimps, gibbons, baboons ... and that warped manta ray we can't seem to keep out of the men's room".
The story of Jeff, son of a scientist, and his companion Ping the chimpanzee, though corny, is heartfelt. When looked at on different levels, the songs can be applied to any relationship that suffers through growing pains, trials and seperation.
Couple emotional storytelling and outstanding music with pop-culture references to King Kong, comic books (even the Ultrahumanite gets a reference!) and '70s Hanna Barbera cartoons and you've got the short definition of "Ookla the Mok".
Appropriately, the album culminates in a gladiatorial death struggle between Blip from Space Ghost and Gleek from Superfriends. I now know perfection and it is called "Smell No Evil".
