World Asylum is a good example of how a metal band who saw the majority of their success in the 80s can come back and still melt faces. The album itself of course suffers from what many bands from that era suffer. To keep with the times many bands abandon the style of play and general aesthetic for which they were made famous. The sound is overall heavier, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, Just more of what metal today resembles. The most notable difference in this album in comparison to Leatherwolfs previous albums are the vocals. Face melting falsettos have become somewhat unfashionable in music today. There isn't nearly as much range. The one thing this album has to offer in regards to Leatherwolf's original sound is the gnarly guitar riffs snuck into the songs. While any metal enthusiast worth his or her salt would enjoy this album, it's important to note that Leatherwolf's earlier work had an energy to it that puts World Asylum to shame. If you are a longtime fan of Leatherwolf and have stumbled onto this album, it's unlikely you will be as satisfied with the sound as it is notably different than albums such as Street Ready, and much of the work Leatherwolf put out in 1987. In the end, World Asylum comes out as a decent album, but an album that surrenders itself to the modern norm of metal today. One could argue that in their prime Leatherwolf was simply surrendering to the norm of their contemporaries. It's likely Leatherwolf is targeting a younger audience as opposed to trying to bring back long time fans. In any case, it is a decent album and still good to see a band that experienced only minor stardom back from a long hiatus.

Years Active: '80s, '90s

One of many promising metal bands to emerge out of the greater Los Angeles area during the early 1980s, Orange County's Leatherwolf would be frequently singled out for their unique, "triple axe attack," featuring Mike Olivieri (who also sang for the band), Geoff Gayer, and Carey Howe. But even though...
