Edgy Pop
by Sophia's PopThis is a great collection of catchy pop songs that chronicle some of the unpleasantries of the human condition -- unpleasantries that are no strangers to most of us: loneliness, feelings of worthlessness, heartache, bad days in general.
Neil's songs are extremely well-crafted. (Catchy. Remember?) And they're varied. The album provides a great mix of mid-tempo rockers, ballads, and blues. Plus, the musical arrangements, production, and performances are superb.
Your favorite song will change from day to day. One day it'll be the gem "Single On Sunday." Another day it'll be "Monica" or "Loser" or any of the other aural nuggets. There's not a clunker in the bunch.
Neil doesn't leave us to wallow in his misery. The spirited closer "Butterfly" takes us to the spot where we find our inner resolve, perseverance, and intestinal fortitude.
If you're hankering for pop music (with or without an edge), look no further.
