Portland Tribune review of BlackHeart WhiteNoise

by barbara mitchell

Gritty, glammy and ever so slightly goth, BlackHeart WhiteNoise is quickly making a splash. Although the band has been together for just over six months, it’s released one of the most confident, catchy and fully realized local CDs of the year.

From the first notes of “Our Lives in Black and White,” it’s apparent that BlackHeart WhiteNoise means business.

There’s a swagger and a little bit of danger – this is a band who film their lives “in black and white, because color shows the bloodshot in our eyes.”

Songs like “December’s Child” and “Panomine” bring to mind the dark-edged pop of the Psychedelic Furs, while “Guest List” wouldn’t sound out of place on an Iggy Pop album.

It’s hard to pick a favorite tune – any one of them sound like they could become the next breakaway hit on modern rock radio. Catchy and full of attitude, BlackHeart WhiteNoise is a band to watch

good stuff.

The music on their first self-titled release surges forward from the unrelenting opening track, “Our Lives in Black and White” and the hip shaking rock anthem “Guest List,” to darkly alluring tracks like “December’s Child” and “Panomine” to the deeply cathartic “Feel Good and Shine” and back again to optimistic sweet pop melodies on “Picture Perfect World” and “The State We’re In”. It’s a bit of a wild ride thanks to the distinct and otherworldly C. Arden Hinds (vocals). Sounding a little bit and nothing like such alt.rock icons as Richard Butler, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie, Hinds’ vocal rants, intense crescendos, and gritty lamentations are perfectly set against BlackHeart WhiteNoise’s unrelenting guitar riffs, propulsive bass lines and huge wall of sound created by Dano Capristo (drums), Michael Pieretti (guitar), Chance Hausler (guitar) and Connar Gilles (bass). The music is in constant movement with the band showcasing their inspirations by drawing from such diverse sources as discordant post-punk to pop-tinged anthemic rock, often in the same song. It is a rewarding listen, as lively and intelligent as it is unique and challenging compared with many of today’s cookie cutter releases.

Their self-released debut CD is ambitious: the songs explore both ends of the continuum with regard to joy and grief, denial and acceptance, life and death … black and white. With the experienced shine on their self-titled full length, and the ability to bring it alive in an uncompromising and memorable live performance, it’s no surprise you’ll be hearing more of this band soon.
