Aye, it's good!

by Echo4163

Lovely, lively and fresh, this Celtic-- er, West Coast-- group, makes me want to get out me pipe, shine up me shamrock buckles and dance along. If this is indeed Rough Around the Edges, I'll be keepin' an eager eye out for Polished to Perfection.

Syncopation Fever!

by R.Bow.

They just can't help it. They're syncopation-crazy! They're Syncopaths. And we're lucky they are!

These four from LA and Tacoma play rich, infectious, enlivelning and completely fun music based in Irish jigs, reels, marches and waltzes. They start with the Irish-Celtic tradition and then transcend the genre, making the music individual through their stellar musianship, arrangements, precsion and sense of syncopated rhythm. This music is smart, sharp and filled with joie de vivre.

Some tunes are quick and some are deliciously slower and slinkier. Flavors of jazz, calypso and funk creep in. The classic Julia Delaney really struts with attitude between the dialogue of full, rich violin and plucked jazzy banjo. Keyboards and bodhran keep the rhythm going with drive and great touches of syncopation throughout.

A surprising discovery for me is that these tunes were recorded live. The recording quality is high, and the audience does not interfere with the incredible playing. When applause and cheers come at the end, one thinks, "Oh yea, it was live - incredibly alive!" It's near studio-quality with the urgency of a live performance.

After 9 delightful musical forays in related and entertainingly different directions, the Syncopaths end with a lovely waltz sung by bodhran player Christa Burch, who has a gorgeous Irish-ballad-worthy voice.

This is a fabulous recording that will keep you dancing, even when the only danceing you can do is in your heart. And the syncopation keeps you smiling.
