Album Review
Guitarist Dave Askren writes complex originals, quirky pieces that often have unusual structures. The quartet on Some Other Things plays Askren's compositions with expertise and, although there are spots where the music seems a bit dry, these performances have their charm. While "Some Other Things" is based a bit on "All the Things You Are" and "More or Less" is a stretched-out blues (18 rather than 12 bars), the other pieces are all quite original and tricky. Askren on guitar and Jeff Benedict on tenor and soprano play at their best while bassist Mike Flick and drummer Jon Nathan are stimulating in support. This music will grow on listeners.
