Post-folk EP mixes lyricism and interesting textures

by Corbell

Hi,

I'm pleased to present you with my new CD, star like a swallow. This is independent music produced in Portland, Oregon.

My music has been called "post-folk". I am equally drawn to lyrical songwriting, to abstract music composition, and to expressive performance. Fans of my music have mentioned that they like my singing, the lyrics, and the variety of instrumental textures and moods that my ensemble produces when we play live.

In some of the songs there is more folk influence than others; on this EP, "Hunger never dies" has probably the most traditional feel. "When you need" has similar instrumentation but rocks a bit more toward the end - it's a heartfelt critique of life in a consumerist world where every conceivable vice or virtue has a market niche.

Other songs on the record are less folksy and could probably be classified as indie rock or alternative; this includes the dark, nihilistic track "Medicine", the ambient "Erfindung", and the somewhat psychedelic title track.

I think "Ghost of Whitman" may in some ways be the most unique song on the record. It's instrumentation evokes minimalist composers while the lyrics and melody are modern and poetic, somewhere between Leonard Cohen and early REM I think. It's a haunted imagist meditation on American history and culture.

Although the tracks all lack a drum kit (by design), the sparse percussion that is used and the instrumental textures give the music a fair amount of density and, when appropriate, drama.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to my work, and visit chriscorbell.com to find out about shows or to contact me.
