just like being at a live show

by austinwatson

julie's unique and emotive vocal style really comes through well, and her "boston"-style guitar is well captured. "insomnia song", "fate says he's sorry", and "the waiting room" are my particular favorites, showcasing the poignancy that permeates julie's songwriting, and the poignancy in her voice.

i've seen her live several times, and when you close your eyes, listening to this album is like being at a show, but minus the smoke and obnoxious people who didn't come to hear the show.

i am fan of live recordings, because they capture the songs in their natural habitat, raw, and maybe with some mistakes, or voice breaks that belie the emotion smoldering just under the surface. they are so much more alive than studio albums with their endless overdubbing and flawless production. and "all that you ask for" is a pure delight, bottling the essence of what we want from a live show. i rank it right up there with Jonatha Brooke's "Live", one of my favorite albums of all time. and while Jonatha's influence on Julie is discernible, she's no aspiring carbon copy.

so, download this, close your eyes, and attend a Julie Loyd concert in the privacy of your own ear buds.
