Dr. E. got her own....
by Give_Me_Your_CoffeeI just got back from the NCPTW conference at Penn State, and had to look this album up. Dr. E. was there rocking out, and man can she belt it! All of us tutors couldn't help but dance like crazy to her band's fabulous music. The only down side is that she was so good live and in person, that the music on this album seems a little flat in comparison. Buy the album, and then go see them perform; they'll blow you away!
Know It, Feel It, Shake It
by Dancing in the BathtubIn Coat of Flesh, Dr. E sings from the bottom of her throat to the front of your mind. Sexy, literate, funky, and intelligent, Dr. E and the Fleshcoats have been hooded with a doctorate in connecting head and heart, brain and booty. Know it and feel it.
Lifted by a jazzy piano and funky bass, “In Joy” shows Dr. E’s deep and wide vocal range, from grown-n-sexy to church-‘n’-testifyin’. You won’t sit still for the gettin’-up-‘n’-gettin’-down sing-along funk of “Grown Folks’ Music,” the song that offers a theme for the whole album. The tight, spot-on guitar highlights and organ touches are especially appealing above the driving rhythm section. Be warned: this song could give you a full-grown ear worm. “(I Gotta Go) Back to Work” pits the grown-up professionalism of week-day reality against the give-me-free daydreaming of weekend lovin’. The protagonist stares at the computer screen but isn’t “feelin’ it,” wishing instead for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday when she can lie beside her man and twiddle her toes next to his feet. Ringing piano chords give way to a steppin’-‘n’-slidin’ dual-tone bass figure in “Written in My Heart,” which in turn yields heavenly harmonies in Dr. E’s high register. The low range of her vocal spectrum launches the sensual, cosmic funk of “I See Heaven.” She makes us see the sun, planets and stars because that’s what she is: a star.
Dr. E has been compared to Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, India.Arie, and Erykah Badu. You’ll hear a hint of Eartha Kitt, too. While the jazzy soul of Dr. E’s smart, spiritual, and sexy lyrics will flatter your earbuds, the Fleshcoats will reward full-grown speakers, the sub-woofer in particular: not the rim-rattling boom and thud of a searching young man in his ride but the deep and steady groove of grown folks who “got their own” and “know who they are.” The tension and depression of “Back to Work” will ring truer for most grown folks than will the didactic sweetness of “Happy Music,” though doctors do need to teach the children. But whether preaching uplift or admitting doubts, Dr. E is teaching a truth, and she’s shaking the world with her music.
Fresh Air
by Kaila LeeI think Dr.E is an amazing vocalist. Her voice is pure, rich, and has a jazzy, soulful r&b vibe. I think that Dr.E will go far throughout her career.
