Wonderful and Unique... and one of the best songs EVER

It's too bad we can't get the 2 lp set from IPR on Itunes, but I will take this. If you have never heard PHANTOMS IN THE DARKROOM then you are missing one of the most brilliant post punk tracks ever recorded... PERIOD. Worth searching out is their song "THE END WILL NOT BE HAPPY"... a real riot and loads of fun. Oh... sorry... and "CHILDREN'S RAP"... also brilliant.

It is great to have them back.

WOW - what a disc! I'm still bouncing!!!

Human Hands were a seminal Los Angeles art-punk outfit born in the late 70s, and have recently come back to life in a more straightforward pop-rock style. In their first incarnation, from which all these tracks are culled, they played some of the most challenging art-damaged rock being made at the time.

Equally influenced by XTC, Talking Heads, Stockhausen, exotica, noise, and punk, these five veterans of the LA experimental scene converged to create some truly catchy and memorable songs. During their lifespan, they released one proper single (!) and in 1982, Independent Project Records, run by local music fan and scenester Bruce Licher, released a definitive two record compilation that sold a couple thousand copies on vinyl then went out of print - taking the legacy of the band with it to obscurity. Now this CD brings back to glorious digital life some of their best known songs, and appends their set with some previously unreleased songs and alternate versions never before heard.

With three band members emanating from the Los Angeles Free Music Society (one of the most influential 20th century experimental music collectives from the US in the 1970s) along with a singer who previously belted out Masque-era first generation punk tunes with his band the Consumers, punks transplanted from Phoenix to LA, you get equal amounts of smart, angular rock coupled with gritty, punk-influenced angst that will keep your toes tapping, err bouncing, the entire listen.

After Human Hands disbanded in 1981, members went onto such outfits as the Romans, Solid Eye, Wall of Voodoo, Dream Syndicate, and currently a new incarnation of the band is performing all across the country for your enjoyment.
