Concept albums don't have to be boring!
by Indie HunterI have been buying Citadel music in reverse release order, by accident at first but then why not keep going? I got this CD from CDBaby and then got the graphic novel that goes with it from the band's website. I tried their original concept called 'timed narrative' and it works! You are supposed to start the CD and start reading and when the singers come in, you are reading the lyrics, when the instrumental sections are playing, you're reading the storyline! Uncanny but it works! I don't think anyone else has ever tried an idea like this? I am usually bored by many progressive 'concept' albums because they have long and drawn out filler sections, but The Citadel of Cynosure & Other Tales is like The Wall or Tommy, the pace is so fast and the music is so diverse that before you know it, it's over. This is quite a mind blowing experience and there are all kinds of movie-like sound effects. Trippy prog metal rock folk and a bunch of crazy stuff mixed in!
Great songs, with music, lyrics & art in a sci-fi/fantasy storyline!
by ProggirlThe Citadel of Cynosure and Other Tales is the first CD released by the band Citadel (they previously released vinyl). Some songs rock hard and others are smooth and flowing, some songs mix many styles. The lyrics are strong, well written and allegorical. This is one of my favorite albums, and after seeing them perform live, I am even more amazed! Take a first listen to MWND - a super tight rock instrumental, or mellow Stygian Barque with string quartet - or the hot guitar solo break in Savior!
Don't be fooled by the imitators out there, you can rest assured it's the real Citadel when you see the little R in a circle next to their name - they own it! Proggirl gives them an 11 out of 10!!!
