New Beginning

by RGarcia

Gone is the dancefloor driven synths of yester-year. Anything Box establishes a new direction heavily influenced by the reemergence of punk in the 90's and The Beatles. Yes, one does feel that diehard fans of Worth and Hope may feel alienated by Electrodelica and the loss of Dania Morales on this record.
But more important is the sense that tracks like "45" and "Popsong" seem forced and lack identity. "Mine" may achieve it's sweetness (or creepiness - whatever was intended) if allowed to develop outside of it's 2 minute confines.
However Claude S. does turn out notable melodies in the form of "Conscious" and "Doubt." Tracks like "Small" with their sweetness allow this album to flourish despite the feel of it being littered with B-sides.

Worth owning. One of their best.

Anything box revisits the euphoria and innocence of "Peace" briefly in the song 'Automatons' almost to prove that they can still do it, which is appreciated. Most of the songs are tender, vast, and require careful listening and appreciation. The ever fragile 'Need' threatens to break like an ice crystal in the morning sunlight and is a masterpiece in itself. The album is their best since Worth which included the best song written since "Peace"; 'Decades' although 'Automatons' from this album gives it a run for the money. Their Beatles influence shows through like an under-painting on songs like 'Conscious', 'Popsong', and 'Heaven60' where a melotone flute bookends the movements within. There are frantic moments where Claude seems to be crying out with hopelessness. There are happy moments. Also, anesthetically (no, I didn’t mean aesthetically) enjoyable songs, like Telemetry. The bonus material is welcome and pleasing. If you like anything box, especially their later works you will like this album.
