Album Review

Although Bucky Halker is probably more likely to be filed under the folk section than any other, much of the music on Wisconsin 2-13-63, Vol. 2 actually fits better into the folk-rock, roots rock, or Americana categories. On a set of compositions written as far back as 1985 and as recently as 2007, Halker adeptly blends shades of Byrdsy folk-rock, honky tonk, swaggering bar band, blues, and even some relatively straight-ahead rock with somewhat Elvis Costello-ish vocals. The areas his songs address might be fairly familiar to this territory: hitting the road, regrets over romantic pitfalls, odes to inspirational singers ("T-Texas Tyler (In Idaho)"), hard times with no easy path out. Refreshingly, they're essayed here not in the world-weary way so common to this sort of approach, but with more of an upbeat lilt that, if not exactly happy-go-lucky, avoids the implied self-pity so prevalent in many records covering similar ground. Halker's singing is likeably earnest, but when he cedes a guest lead vocal to Janet Bean (most known for her work in Freakwater) for one of the most somber and strongest tunes, "Chequamegon (Winter Song)," it's a real highlight.

A Great American Songwriter

by kennethcain

This is yet another volume of great songs written and performed by Bucky Halker. This CD spans jazz, rock, and folk and again features incredible musicians. Check out all his albums dating back over 20 years. Amazingly crafted songs that deserve to have a wider audience. This latest album is a tour de force of musicianship featuring a crazy variety of styles from jangly guitars to jazz violin. Add all this to Bucky's usual unique and thoughtful lyrics and you have a rare gem in the music industry today.

Bucky's Best Yet!!!

by GordonsGirl

This was one of the best releases of last year. Definitely Bucky's best release yet... Though always a strong songwriter, none of his previous releases display such diversity. "Thinkin Bout That Girl" begs for a long ride on the open road. Great jing-jangly pop... "St. Francis" is a beautiful tune with a message all should take to heart. The bird calls opening and closing the CD are eloquent.

For anyone unfamiliar with Halker's work, start here... As an artist, he only continues to grow and reach new heights. Whether you enjoy folk, alt-country or GOOD pop music, this is an excellent addition to any CD collection or iPod playlist.

A Troubadour for our times.

by Profane1

Bucky is one of our most important troubadours, and we need them now to witness the degradation of our political culture. His earlier recordings were composed largely of political and labor songs, some of which he wrote and some of which he culled from his work as a labor historian. This new album, however, is a chronicle of his own life and loves--more personal than earlier work. The best song on the album, for those of us who know the jazz scene in Chicago, is "Birdland Symphony" featuring the great jazz violinist Johnny Frigo. It's a great cut and Johnny still has the best jazz chops in the windy city. He's a legend. Bucky also has a wonderful ode to a coffee-and-fried-egg-laden two-day trip to get back from a gig longing for that special lover back home: "40 hours to a kiss." And he knows the sorrows of lost love (the clothes and records and books and personal stuff gone when you get home from that gig): "Without Saying Goodbye." This is a great album. You'll recognize your life in Bucky's songs. That's what a good troubadour can do. In addition to Johnny, Bucky has also some terrific backup musicians (e.g. the piano on the hiilarious and jump-jazzy "Fish on a Line"). Bucky's musical judgment is impeccable, and he mixes it up sylistically so each song has something new to offer musically. (Listen to the Latin rhythm framing the mysterious shooting in "Gun So Small".) Get this recording--it's terrific.
